Thing 23

Now I have reached the end. the learning has just begun I guess. The program was basically good and easy to follow now I have to motivate myself further to go more into the things that interested me the most. I liked the images, library thing, ebooks and bits of other things. I have learnt its easier to do a blog than design a web page and wikki's are a thing to followup too. thank you to the organisers for this opportunity to see the Web from a different angle to my previous usage. Now onto the rest of my life long learning curve which is often vertical and somtimes scary just like if you were standing in this photo. Goodluck to all you library bloggers out there.

Thing 22

It just blows me away what is available on the net. I have checked out the ebooks site and there are so many stories to choose from and they are all free at this stage amazing!!

Thing 21

Podcasts seem useful if you miss out on a seminar or need to listen to a programme you have missed. A good way to listen to some music before you buy or download and it costs you money. There seems to be a lot of advertising to wade through and you would have to be careful opening some of the items too. My favourite is the ABC where you could catch up on programmes you have missed or need further information about.

After thought

This could be very useful in library land as a way of us country bumpkins being able to catch conferences or seminars we can't get to. Not sure about the delays in loading though. Maybe thats where podcasts will help.

WOW I DID IT

If you read the instructions properly you can sometimes succeed in a task wow am I clever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thing 20 cont

Well I don't know I've ended up with 2 links to You tube but no actual video footage on my blog. How did other people achieve this feat I ask??? I am just not into the 21st century I feel.

Thing 20

Well can't believe I am actually surfing You tube that's what my kids do when I want them to do homework or bring the washing in - not what I do. I must admit I did raise a laugh at a couple of sites one was the medieval library and the transition from scrolls to books much like my transition from books to Internet and web2.0. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQHX-SjgQvQ Another was a site my kids showed me about Harry Potter and a skit done by some puppets which was quite funny too. I will try and upload them to my blog hope it works.

Thing 19

Well I have had a bit of a surf around, Visited the Web 2.0 awards site and clicked on a few prize winners. The mashup sites which I believe are “social networking” sites don’t really interest me as I am into the old fashioned way of chatting face to face with people. Anyway Boxxet http://www.boxxet.com/ seemed fairly narrow but Ning http://www.ning.com/ l ooked a bit more friendly and easier to use.
I thought the wiki sites weren’t bad, liked wetpaint http://www.wetpaint.com/ lots of interesting travel, cooking and pet wikis. PBwiki http://pbwiki.com/ looked very business orientated but useful if you are into that type of thing. stikkipad http://stikipad.com/ looked OK too but having to pay would put you off.
43 things caught my eye to try after the 23 things Ha HA. http://www.43things.com/ full of lists of what people wanted to achieve in their lives interesting to read and may even be useful to motivate some!!! There's certainly lots of interesting ways of surfing the net and lots of fun things to do and read about if you are that way inclined.

Thing 18 cont

Now looked at Google docs. But time has run out and I need to go home. so TTFN
Why won't these things publish directly to my blog from the new accounts I have set up????

THING 18

So here is my first Zoho document. Hopefully I will be able to post it to my blog. I can see the universal uses for this thing. But not sure if I would use it a lot considering I have paid all that money for my microsoft packages. At least it helps Bill Gates donate to charities!!!!!

I didn't manage to get this on here directly from the Zoho account I had made. Not sure what I did wrong.???? Going back to investigate

What things have I done # 6 & 7

I am back agian having read the progress log I think I may have confused the poor people who are checking over these things. SORRY I seem to have missed Thing 7 blogging about technology I like. I love my digital camera and the USB Stick, card or drive which is so transportable and contains so much information. Mashups too seem a cool idea and I intend to invetigate further. Love google earth zeroing in on family and friends. Just tried to upload a mashup card and there is a temporary error. Oh Hum. On with the rest.
Chow
With the previous blogs I should now by my calculation (correct me if I am wrong) have completed Things 1-17.

A thought!! or maybe a drip, drop or ripple effect.

Love this image just how I feel right now a mere ripple in a large pool or maybe just a drip.!!!

Week 7 Wikkis Thing # 15,16,17

Liked the image so thought I'd add it "cos I can!!!"
These are dynamic and collective, updating quickly to take account of new developments, and drawing on the expertise of a very broad, very deep readership. Mind you don’t believe everything you read you don’t have to be an expert in any field or even know anything to write about it. How will we ever achieve a balance of truth and free use for all?
I think that a wiki is a good idea for any group that has a common purpose. So a wiki for a conference or a group working on scientific experiments or just a social group could be useful.
Having helped to design a web page and therefore knowing how hard this was wikis appeal to me but then the control freak within says hang on anyone can edit it that’s no good a dilemma occurs somewhat.!!!!!!!!!!!
Like this wiki http://www.libsuccess.org/

I just went into favourite blogspots and found our library service wasn’t there so added it and now waiting for the editing to take place. Not sure if it worked may have to go back to the sandpit to check.
I am filling in time before I pick up my Year 12 daughter from end of school party so look out gobbledy gook could start very soon.

Week 6 Things # 12,13,14

Folsonomy probably has poor old Mr Dewey rotating in his grave. Sounds like there are no hard fast rules just go with the flow and whatever pops into your head ay? I guess if you are a web designer and needing your information to hit as many people as possible you would need to be into metadata and tagging in a big way so that your site can appear in the early scroll down of any particular search. IE be at the top of the "dog" search instead of number 1million and 99.
Technorati's "State of the Blogosphere" postings, which claimed that they track 27.7 million blogs, but not Myspace !! Nearly won the 2006 web award but was outstripped by Flickr and Google Maps. The latter would have to be my favorite site at the moment, having many friends and relatives living in Europe I can zero in on to their houses and almost watch them weed the garden. WOW.!!!!!

I joined Library thing but can’t go back to my account because my cookies in my computer aren’t set to the right time. Boo Hoo it is the right time by the ABC beeps so whose time should my computer go by??? I could do with a cookie right now Macadamia and white chocolate are my favourite. I do like the concept of library thing though and intend to enter many of the books I have read. I quite like the book suggester tag that could be quite useful at work.

"Just in case collections"
Reliance on user education I believe the research skills need to be taught in Preps and honed on right through school I am beginning to push this barrow after giving up for a while. The kids still need to read to do any of this web stuff so literacy is still important and the start of it all so to say.
I think we can help in this age of too much choice of reference points by making sure our web page at the library has a one stop shop with access through searches to the best sites available on the web. We are starting with our encyclopaedia online, ebsco and various referencing tools that we subscribe too but with the advent of library consortia surely we can work towards having the best quality search engines and information to hand. Wow I just read O’Reilly’s report and he agrees with me!!!!
John J. Riemer on better bibliographic services makes a lot of sense. That is also what I was talking about one stop shop for all your info.

I love this quote “When you have a program that is exceeding expectations, you have the foundation for success. Empowering the patrons will empower your library.” From George Bishop, Information Centre Director, Ovid-Elsie Schools
http://www.oclc.org/nextspace/002/advocacy.htm

There’s some really interesting stuff out there if you know where to find it and I guess that’s what WEB 2 and 23 things is all about.

The majority of this type of event was covered at the ALIA Library Tech conference I recently attended as I said in and earlier blog.

Lesson 6 confused as to what number I am up to Thing 12

I haven't been here for a while and its taken me all day to get this far. I have been reading about Rollyo, Tagging and Techno something but I need to go back big time and check all these things out. I don't seem to be able to link all this stuff together I now have a blog account, bloglines account, Rollyo account, RSS feeds account, and a Flickr account can they all meet on my blog?I also have some must use web sites too so I thought I'd add them for good measure too. Better close the Library its 8.30.

Lesson 4

I have now set up a blogline account but somehow and I Know not how??!! I have a multitude of feeds down one side which go nowhere. whoops. Gosh I sound so negative I don't mean too but after 2 and a half hours I think I have frozen my brain. Its still pouring outside too and I haven't had a walk all day. I know I might try some more technology a new edition to our household last week was an electronic walking machine, can I fit 2 dogs on it too I ask?? That would be a good photo shoot!!!
Well watch this space and I might have to return to bloglines when my brain is less stuffed full of technogarb.

Attempt number 3 to insert an image am I good???

Try again to upload a photo it didn't work last time!!!

Hopefully it will work this time. I have now spent 1 and a half hours of my Sunday afternoon doing this but I am determined to conquer. Just as well it is raining wonderful rain we sooooo need it. Hence I can sit here and rabbit on instead of doing the millions of jobs I have on my list. That is what I am a list person not a diary person. So what was on the list this weekend apart from knocking off lesson 3 & 4 in this technology thingo. Wheel barrowing 6 metres of dirt into vegetable gardens my husband, son and neighbour have started to build, (too wet phew save job for next week), rake up a large area of sawdust and twigs created by the demise of a 150 year old cypress tree (I actually completed that task before the rain), sow grass seed in this area (too wet now). Upload photo's hopefully it will work now. I better publish and see. Chow for now

I did lesson 3 I think.

This flickr business was quite interesting but who has the time to do that type of thing I ask? Anyway I think I succesfully uploaded 2 photo's of the Yarragon Primary School Libray onto the site. I didn't have any photo's of the public library I work at. Now I have probably given my identity away. Which I was trying hard not to do oops. Well as far as keeping an online diary which I guess is what a blog is I am not good in that department. I mean I have never physically kept a diary past new years day ever!!!
Anyway today I am supposed to upload a photo to this blog so I thought I woul upload a photo of my number one fan and president of my fan club Elly my wonderful 10 year old golden retreiver.

Not sure what I am up to???!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well here goes my first attempt at blogging or is it to blogg?? Not really into all this type of techno highbrow stuff. I mean I don't even have a mobile phone.!! Don't ask me how to text, although I have been known to receive a text on my daughters phone. Wow. Must roll with the times ay. I got a shock today when I realised it was week 3 and I hadn't even completed week 2 thing. Way behind and what am I always saying to my kids have you got your homework up to date, not a good example here, hopefully they won't find out.
